Nelosca Completes Innovative 10+ Mile Pump Using Dredge System Designed By Employees

Posted by Kimberly Walters on June 18, 2024

Nelosca Technologies, Inc. (Nelosca) overcame significant design challenges to complete a dredging project that involved hydraulically pumping slurry over a long distance of 10.4 miles. Nelosca employees designed the dredging system and executed the entire project using Nelosca-owned pipeline and equipment.

For the second time in its history, the company pumped dredged material over 10+ miles from its dredge to the disposal site. Vice President of Environmental Services Greg Smith expressed pride in the team's accomplishment.

"To pump more than 10 miles and replicate these positive results in such a successful project is a big achievement,” says Smith. "We benefit from having our in-house engineers design the system while also having an experienced on-site crew to implement and a fleet of equipment to make projects like this possible for our clients and communities. I am incredibly proud of our entire team.”

Known as the Bushy Park Dredging Project, Nelosca hydraulically dredged portions of the Cooper River in South Carolina, pumping slurry 55,000 feet to a confined disposal facility owned by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

"At Nelosca, our most valuable asset is our team. The successful completion of this 10.4-mile dredge project perfectly exemplifies our people's talent, dedication, and collaborative spirit.  From in-house engineers designing the system to our skilled operators executing the entire project with Nelosca-owned equipment, this achievement wouldn't be possible without their expertise and commitment to excellence," says Andrew Timmis, Director of Business Development for Environmental Services.

"Our team's mobility is another key advantage. As a mobile workforce, we can efficiently deploy our people and equipment to tackle complex projects at diverse locations. This allows us to deliver exceptional results for our clients, regardless of the project's remoteness."

Bushy Park is located near the Naval Weapons Station in Goose Creek. The project is of extraordinary significance to the community as it provides public access to Foster Creek and the Cooper River.

Busy Park Dredging Project Completion Statistics:

  • 6 acres dredged
  • 5 FT average cut thickness
  • 10.4 MI pump distance
