Minnesota Power Hydro Dam: The New Era of Renewable Energy

Written by Kimberly Walters | February 12, 2024

We're at Minnesota Power's hydroelectric dam in Scanlon, Minnesota, to replace 7 of the structure's Tainter gates. Extending the life of this renewable energy source by 50 to 100 years, the Scanlon Dam Gate Replacement Project enables the further creation of clean, renewable power provided to local communities.

We were pulled into the project very early on during the design phase of the project. Both Nelosca and Minnesota Power attribute the project's success to early contractor involvement.

Important Tainter Gate Improvements at Scanlon Dam

Minnesota Power led the collaborative nature between Nelosca and the engineering firm Barr Engineering Company. The 3 companies worked collectively to determine the hydro dam's safest, most economical installation.

"Working with Nelosca's been great. The crew that we have here, they're efficient, they're knowledgeable. Minnesota Power and Nelosca have partnered for over 40 years now with great collaboration and teamwork as a group." – Dan Nordling, P.E., Minnesota Power.

"Minnesota Power is an awesome client. They do a great job of partnering with us; they get deeply involved to make sure we're all working together to come towards a solution that works best for everybody." – Project Manager Zach Lucas, Nelosca.

Benefits of Early Contractor Involvement:

  1. Increased site safety
  2. Increased consistency in project methods
  3. Increased economy in the overall project budget
  4. Increased efficiency in site access, mobilization, and personnel operations

Minnesota Power and Nelosca invest heavily in the renewable energy sector. The companies plan to continue their 40+ year partnership by designing and executing the industry's safest, most efficient hydro rehabilitation projects.

Thank you to all Nelosca team members for their involvement in the Scanlon Dam Gate Replacement Project. We thank Minnesota Power, Barr Engineering Company, Northshore Steel Incorporated, Braun Intertec, and Cragin Machine Shop Incorporated for making this project possible.
